Bsc in Social Work

Like nursing and education, the B. Sc in Social Work degree will prepare students for immediate entry into human service positions. Student pursuing this programme can expect to complete courses in social work practice, issues in social welfare, history, diversity and the struggle for human rights, promotion of social and economic justice, social welfare policy, social work practice, social research methods, and 1human behaviour theory in addition to other areas under social work. Upon completion, graduates will be eligible for employment in several areas such as:

About The Social Work Programme

The B.Sc. Social Work programme has a duration of two (2) years. The programme is a dynamic one, where students will be exposed to industry practices and experiences as much as is possible during the delivery of the programme.

This programme targets any of the following individuals:

  •  Persons with industry experience who are supervisors but need formal training.
  • Mature learners already working in the field and interested in pursuing a tertiary education in
    social work
  • Graduates with an Associate Degree in related fields/specific fields.
  • Individuals with degrees in other fields seeking a career change to social work.

Work Experience

The B.Sc. in Social Work will prepare graduates to utilize a planned change or problem solving approach that encompasses engagement, assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and follow-up. It will prepare learners to work with a clientele which may consist of individuals, families, groups, organizations, or communities.
Upon completion of this program, the graduate is expected to be able to function in primary as well as secondary social work settings.

This programme will allow learners and graduates to:

  1. Use technology in various activities required in the helping profession
  2. Demonstrate competence in areas of counselling, interviewing, research and data collection
  3. Communicate in writing and orally
  4. Display interpersonal skills appropriate for working in Client Services and other Human Services agencies.
  5. Comply with the laws and regulations governing Social Service and Social Service agencies
  6. Experience social field work with clients, groups and communities
  7. Apply ethical principles in making decisions and various situations encounter in the helping professions.
  8. Understand the concepts and principles of human behavior in a social environment.
  9. Respond to the client in the context of the values and ethics of the Social Work profession.
  10. Apply critical thinking to inform and communicate in a helping relationship.
  11. Identify the system of resources available for social service.
  12. Demonstrate professional problem-solving skills in a helping relationship.
  13. Respect diversity and differences in human services.
